"As we grew up, we used to rent boards from the old Tavern; 50 cents-a-day, 25 cents-a-day kind of thing." Wally looked over the rim of his glasses at me. "And, then we finally got some boards of our own. We were able to buy or somebody gave us some." We sat on Wally's bed, pouring over old photograph albums and talking story of the Hot Curl days. It was not lost on me that I was at last interviewing one of surfing's pioneer big wave riders. Wallace Froiseth, born December 21, 1919, is perhaps the most well-known of the Hot Curl surfers of the 1930s and '40s.
